Allen was formerly assumed to be one of the two eldest of 17 children of Joseph Haigh and Dinah Beardsell. He does not appear to have been baptized at the local Church of England or the independent chapel and he does not appear with the family during Joseph Haigh's lifetime (to 1881).

He has been left in the list in case he turns out to be the son of another Haigh couple. There are a number of men named Joseph Haigh, but Dinah is a much less common name.
