Origins

Alice was identified in early works as marrying Matthew Marvin as "Mrs. Alice Kellogg." William T.R. Marvin, in his must-read 1897 Register article (51:330; free at Google Books) discussing Alice's will, determines that her identification as Alice Kellogg comes from the reference in her will to her daughter Bridget Kellogg. Since Bridget was known to be the daughter of John Bouton (and Alice was not yet known to be his widow), it was assumed that Bridget's husband Daniel was Alice's son. Marvin's analysis of the will identified Alice as John Bouton's widow.

Marvin's article was written in 1897, but the theory that her name was Kellogg persists. For example, this analysis in 1958 perpetuates a misreading of the Memorial History of Hartford:

From "Ancestry and Descendants of Henry Perkins Smith and Christiana (Long) Smith - with added data of Henry's brothers and their families and of Henry's father's and mother's brothers and sisters and their families" compiled by Georgina (Hathaway) Randall - 1958 beginning of page 104:

She [Alice] was his [John Bouton's] only wife and he her first husband. She is mentioned in the "Kelloggs in the Old World and the New" (page 13 [error: it's page 31]) only by her first name and as the wife of John Bouton, Sr., and the mother of his three children. Hoppin says that "Alice is identified on page 251 of the Memorial History of Hartford, Connecticut, as "Miss Alice Kellogg [NOTE: this is WRONG; said Memorial History names her MRS Alice Kellogg.]; in connection with her second marriage about 1647 to Matthew Marvin, Senior. That she was the widow of the immigrant John Bouton is proved by her own will as well as by that of her second husband, both of which instruments name her children by her first husband, John Bowton." She has been called a relative of Nathaniel Kellogg, but it is not known whether she was his sister, cousin, or niece. She probably came with him about 1636. She was about 26 and John about 22 when they were married in 1636 / 7.

Will of "Alce (sic) Marvin of Norwocke … being aged seaventee years or thereabouts."

"Imprimis, I doe will and bequeath the sum of twenty pounds to my sonn John Bowton and to my daughter Bridgit Killock to equally divided between thos two: That is to say, ten pounds apiece."

"Item. I doe give after my decease to my daughter Briggit Kellock my scarfe and my best cloath waskcot and my best serg coat and my best green apron and the best of my two under cotten coats and my spectacles."

"Item, I doe give unto my daughter Abigal Bowton my best hat and my best cloke and my serge wastcoats and my under cotten wastcoat and a pair of letter gloves, 2 brass small wayts."

"Item. I doe give unto my daughter Rachell Smith my penne (stone?) coat and my flannel wastcoat, and to my grandchild Sarah Brinsmead my Cheast; and to my grandchild Ruth Bowton my brass kettle 3 old pewter dishes and a brass Chafendish and a gilpot: and to my grandchild Rachel Bowton my Bible."

Remainder; "my will is shall be devided between my two dafter (sic) Bridget Kellock & Rachel Smith. The hetchell my will is, half to my sonn John Bowton and half to my daughter Brigget Kellock, etc."
