Alfred Rhoades, son of Walter and Mary Rhoades was born in Champaign County, Illinois, August 28, 1851. Departed this life, Artesia, California, Feb. 3, 1928, aged 76 years, 5 months, and 6 days. He was the youngest of a family of 10 children, all of whom, with the exception of one, Mrs. Herman L[?] Dresser[?] of Los Angeles, California have preceded him to life eternal. While he was a very small boy, the family moved to Greene county, Iowa, settling on a farm here in the year 1855, where the father and mother lived the remainder of their days. While still a very young boy, his three brothers all left to serve with the Union army in the Civil war, leaving him, his mother and three sisters, the father having already passed away, to manage the farm and look out for themselves as best they could.
On November 18, 1874, he was united in marriage with Jennie M. Elliott of Dallas county, Iowa, who preceded him to that better world, June 12, 1921. To this union were born two sons, Clyde A. of Anaheim, Calif., and F. Oscar, of Bergen, New York. He was converted to the Christian faith many years ago, which faith he has kept unto the end. He lived in southern California for the past seven years where he came to know and love many friends. The greater part of his life however, having been spent in Iowa, where he was a farmer and carpenter and where he had a host of life-long friends and many relatives, and where his body was laid beside that of his departed companion, awaiting the morning of that great day. The funeral occurred on Friday with Rev. Willis officiating.
