At age ten he was orphaned and raised by his grand-parents Jacobson and Donhowe. He graduated from Story City High School in 1915 and attended Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa 1915-1916. On May 5, 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Coast Military Corps at Fort Armstrong, Hawaii. After his discharge as a sergeant major April 28, 1919, he returned to Story City to work in Charlson's Clothes Shop, the men's clothing stored established by Joseph Marvick and carried on by Peter Donhowe and Ed Charlson. During his 50 years as salesman and later co-owner he worked zealously to promote the Story City community. Alfred was a charter member of the American Legion Post #59 (commander 1921-22). A board member of the Story County Soldiers' Relief Commission, Alfred helped many veterans receive medical aid and admittance into a Veteran's home. He died at home on Christmas Day, 1969, from a myocardial infraction. References
