Facts and Events
Born in Ohio City likely in the early months of 1851, as his mother gave birth to a premature child in Dec 1851. Alfred went with his father and new wife, Martha Tanner to Litchfield, Medina Co., Ohio before September 1853. His father, Monroe enlisted in the Civil War, while Monroe's wife, Martha recovered slowly from an unknown illness. As a result of these circumstances, a cousin of Monroe's either on the GARDNER or GORDENIER side, convinced Monroe and Martha that Alfred would be "safer" if he accompanied him out of Ohio, due to the rumor of battle looming in Ohio at the time. Alfred, about 12 years old, was never heard of again. Conjecture that Alfred had been taken first to Chicago, then Minnesota and Wisconsin, prompted the family to write to anyone they or friends knew in the area.... to no avail. His older brother, Edwin Monroe GARDNER, when of age went to Wisconsin in search of Alfred without success; here Edwin settled, and married and raised a large family. If anyone has a mystery Alfred Gardner or Gordinier born ca 1851, please respond. There was also a rumor that Alfred ended up in Texas. |
