Killed in a Grand Trunk Railroad mishap. Family legend: he worked as a brakeman for RR...top of a bolt (holding 2 train cars apart) came off & he was crushed to death.

Supposedly he was a bodyguard for Queen Victoria back in Scotland...also he reputedly ran away from home at an early age to escape his abusive father.

1984 Betty Ruth ERWIN said that she & Dorothy MICHENER wanted to contact Nelson KUNZ about Alexander's discharge papers.

.

Some relative found record of Alexander's burial in a cemetery in London, Ontario, Canada on an old scroll which gave his name, date & railroad company he worked for...the boy is buried in same grave, only scroll called him John Victor (instead of "Willie" ?)...same age as tombstone for Willie.

legend from George Albert PORTER: Alexander WHITE was born 6 Apr 1846 (some note jotted: Jefferson, Washington...not sure what this means) in Scotland. ...born in parish of Whitekirk in or near town of Haddington in county of Haddington (near Edinburgh).

After having been beaten by his father he enlisted in the 78th Highlanders on 25 Apr 1863 in Edinburgh. He was discharged 17 Apr 1871. (The 78th Regiment later became the 72nd Regiment, then the Seaforth Highlanders.)

Susan NIVEN had gone to Montreal for work which is how Alexander met her there. They were married and went to London, Ontario, where Alex worked on the (Grand Trunk) railroad at a brakeman.

At some point, Alex and Susan made a brief visit to Bay City, at which time they ran a boarding house and restaurant on the middle grounds. Then they returned to Canada.

Reputedly at Chatham, Ontario, Canada...on 5 May 1876 the top of a bolt (separating two train cars) broke off and he was fatally crushed between them.

He is buried in Woodland Cemetery in London, Ontario.
