Personal History

On 7 May 1861, A.C. was made the 1st Lieutenant of the Salina Rifles which was organized as a volunteer Militia Rifle Company under a state law enacted on 20 April.[6] On 4 October, Alexander Spillman, “residence Junction City”, enlisted and was mustered as a private in the 6th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Company F; he was promoted on 24 October to corporal.[7] On 4 November 1862, A.C. Spillman was commissioned as a captain in the 3rd Regiment Indian Home Guards.[8]

Death and Probate

A.C. Spilman died on 1 January 1919[1][2][13] at home in the city of McPherson, McPherson co., Kansas, two days after suffering a heart attack at his office.[1] He was buried in the McPherson Cemetery.[2][13]

Spillman Creek

Spillman Creek, a stream that meets the Saline River about 3 miles west of Lincoln Center, Lincoln co., was named for A.C. Spilman. In an article read before the Kansas Academy of Science, at Iola, on 31 December 1901, J.R. Mead relates how the name came to be given to it:[3]

In 1859 [I], desiring to explore the Saline river, at that time almost unknown, sought information from Col. Wm. A. Phillips, who had recently staked out the town of Salina. He referred me to his brother-in-law, a young man named Spillman, who had been up the river forty miles to a large tributary from the north, miry and difficult to cross on account of salt marshes near its mouth. We arrived at this stream late at night and in the dark drove into a miry bog. I remarked we had found “Spillman's creek” all right, and that name it bears to this day.
