  9. According to granddaughter, Dolly Tompkins, Roy was a dairyfarmer and barber. He was very depressed because he rented the farm and the landlady was getting on him about paying the rent. He drove his daughter and son to school and said goodbye. Someone came later to get them and they knew something was wrong. He had shot himself in the barn and wrote on the wall "I'm not going to the nut house". They carried him to the house bleeding, laid him on the couch. The country doctor came, best friend of her father, doctor said to him "You said you wouldn't do it".
    Adeline wouldn't let him be buried right away, she was so distressed and had him put on the porch until she could handle it. Katherine Hentz rode her horse many miles to come to the family.
    He was very popular - about 500 people went to his funeral.
