Information is from Marie A. French, step-daughter and from "Geneva, Alabama--A History", Geneva Woman's Club 1987, pp57, 141, 265. She was the daughter of Gipsie/Bypsie Eleanor Burch and James Wilburn Daughtry of Hartford, Alabama. She was married1st to Hugh Owens Sr, deceased; 2nd Jacob Stevens Alexander. In Geneva she served as Postmistress for many years. I remember going with her in the car to deliver milk and occasionally a cake to people in the neighborhood--also churning butter, helping to take the cows out to pasture and bringing them home--and the wonderful BIG breakfasts that were prepared for her large family. She had both a wood stove and an electric stove in her big kitchen. Visiting there was my only experience with country or small town life. It was here that I learned to ride a bicycle and smoked a cigar which Aunt Alberta let me do--probably thought it would teach me a lesson. I also tried my hand at milking, unsuccessfully. Nice lady. |
