    Obituary: Al Goldstein

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Services were held last week for Al Goldstein, the last survivor of the six brothers who founded Boys Markets in 1924. Goldstein, 95, died Feb. 25 in Palm Desert, Calif. Goldstein and his brothers started selling produce off pushcarts in the early 1920s, when they were known as “the boys” — the name they used when they opened their first supermarket in 1924. By the time they sold the chain to Breco Holdings in 1988, the company was operating 49 stores; when Yucaipa purchased the chain from Breco Holdings in 1989 for $375 million.
