'Bunni' Goldstein, 89; Founded Grocery Chain With 4 Brothers
May 08, 2002|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Bernard "Bunni" Goldstein, 89, one of the five brothers who founded the grocery chain known as the Boys' Markets, died Thursday in Los Angeles of causes associated with aging.

Born in Ipswich, Mass., he grew up in the Boyle Heights area of East Los Angeles with his siblings and their widowed mother. To support the family, the brothers began selling oranges from a corner stand and peddling groceries door-to-door from a pushcart.

The Goldstein Brothers & Boys Markets

The Goldstein family arrived in Los Angeles around 1915 from Illinois by way of Massachusetts. Five Goldstein boys grew up in Boyle Heights along with their two sisters and widowed mother.

To support the family after the death of his father, 14-year-old Joe Goldstein sold oranges from a corner stand and peddled groceries door-to-door from a pushcart.

By 1924, Joe enlisted his four younger brothers - Max, Al, Eddie and Bernard (Bunni) - to open a produce stand and market on Telegraph Road in Los Angeles.

At the corner of Monte Vista Street and Avenue 55 in Highland Park, the "boys" broke ground for their original full-service store in 1931.
