Facts and Events
Info. Alfreda Marie Baker Cormier: Albert was born in North Dakota on Aug. 4, 1899 the fourth child of Troy and Birdie Baker. Albert was always told he was born in the year 1900, but I found he was in the North Dakota 1900 Census (Albert age 9/12 mos. old). My Dad was a wonderful man he was always happy and good natured and a lot of people liked him. He was so smart, he could fix anything and keep a car running on gum and baleing wire and he loved horses and he was just one of the best riders I knew. INFO: from Albert Bakeer his brother said he thought Walter (age 6 1/2 years old?) died from a rupture appendix. Albert said later on his Mother sister Aunt Minnie got mad at him and was telling everyone that Albert (age 5yr 10mo) killed his brother by feeding him a green crayon. (at the time Walter died the Aunt was not there.) Albert said that for years later he seen his Mother giving her sister money and told them that if it did not stop he would tell his dad and she got mad at him and started lying about him. Albert and his brother Leland had a homestead in Albert, Canada. To make money they worked for ranchers as cowherds too. Sometime they had to work for different ranchers that is why Albert was not with his brother Leland the day he got killed. Leland was killed when his horse stepped in a badger hole and he was thrown from his horse, his chaps got hung up on the saddle horn. His chaps ripped all the way down to the bottom of the leg where there was a thick band of leather and it would not rip so he was drugged to death. Albert had Leland buried in High River, Alberta, Canada. Albert and Leland was the only Baker in Canada at that time. Albert went out to the ranch after Leland died to get his saddle and things and the cowherds had stolen all of his things but a set of long underware. Albert did not get anything back. Albert gave up the homestead and just work for ranchers after that. Leland died April 1922. Albert married April 23, 1923 to Nora Sarah Ann Watrin in High-River, Alberta, Canada. There was no Bakers in Canada but Albert. His family did not like his wife Nora because she was Catholic, Albert became a Catholic so he could marry Nora, his dad Troy did not care, Troy was always so nice to Alberts family. Theri first child was born a month early and the doctor help it with forceps. The Doctor damaged the baby head with the forceps, he lived only 28 days, he died in the hospital, his mother was stall in the hospital too. His dad Albert had to make all the arrangement for the funeral. Albert almost lost his wife, Nora too. She was in the hospital a long time after the baby died. Dad always told a cute story about him and Leland. Their dad Troy had bought a car and they wanted to drive it and their dad would not let them. One day their dad and mother took the younger childern and went to town in the horse and buggy. Then they took the car out of the barn and not knowing how to drive they did not know how to stop it. Then they had a accident with it and broke the windshield out. So they got their horses and polled the car back to the barn and to cover up what they did, they waited till they seen their dad coming home and then put a colt (young horse) in the car and let their dad think the colt got in and broke the windshield.
