LAUNCH-UPSET, TWO LOST
Small Boat Without Lights Hits Ocean Tug's Tow in Hell Gate.
Capt. Meegan of the big ocean tug, Standard, which was towing a string of barges to Bayonne, N.J., noticed a launch without lights passing close beside him near the Black Bouy at Hell Gate at 2:30 yesterday morning "Watch out for my barges," shouted Capt. Meegan to a man and woman aboard the launch. "All right," returned the man. A few second later Capt. Meegan heard screams. He went backward with his tug in the direction of the sound and found a launch capsized. He heard nothing further from the man and the woman and gave up trying to search after an hour. The tug towed the launch, which had Pearl painted on its bow, to Clason's Point. The body of a man believed to be the victim of the collision was found floating off North Beach and was taken to the Morgue. Nothing was found to identify the body.
