Earlier members of this family are reported to be from Gawthorpe, not Gowthorpe. Gawthorpe was a short form of Ossett with Gawthorpe in the West Riding of Yorkshire which is now a large town named Ossett.

It is doubtful if any of the entries for Gowthorpe are correct.
