Facts and Events
Adolphus Montgomery Barker - or Dolph as he was called by family and friends - was born and raised in Chattooga County, Georgia. He graduated from Gaylesville High School in Gaylesville, Alabama, in 1897. In 1908, a young school teacher from Tennessee arrived to teach at the Holland School near the Barker farm. Dolph was quite taken with Miss Lois Link and spent the next five years convincing her to marry him. A record of their courtship can be found in the letters they wrote each other during those years. Lois only taught one year at the Holland School and moved on to teach at several other rural schools before the couple was married in 1913. The letters that survived until today are being scanned and uploaded at [1]. That scanning project can be viewed at the Love Story page on Footnote.
