A. F. Jones (Adelbert Fairfax Jones)

Born: Galena, Illinois 1859 Died: Los Angeles, California 1938

Horace Jones his father was a Lt. in the Civil War A.F. and his parents settled in Omaha, Nebraska after the end Civil War.

Horace Jones (AF's father) first came to California as a 49er during the gold rush. He liked California so much that he and his wife Sarah moved to Los Angeles in 1886.

A.F. married Evaline Sidner in Omaha on Dec 22, 1886. AF and Evaline moved to Los Angeles shortly after getting married. They traveled to California by train, which at the time was about a five-day ride.

He opened A. F. Jones Grocery at 7th and Union near present day downtown Los Angeles on May 6th, 1887. At that time it was the edge of town, but with in a few years West Lake Park was built a few blocks further down Union Street and the city quickly expanded around them.

In 1890, A.F. built their house at 1533 Ingraham Steet. This was about a block from the Grocery store.

On February 21st, 1891 their daughter Winifred was born. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Los Angeles's Westlake School for Girls, which was opened in 1904. It is now Harvard-Westlake High School.

A. F. The Painter

He was a self-taught artist, who started painting as a young man and continued painting until his death in the mid 1930s.

Growing up in Omaha, he was good friends with (John) Gutzon Borglum of Mt. Rushmore fame.

AF Jones and Borglum both left Omaha and met again in California. Borglum had encouraged A. F. to go with him to Paris to study Art but A.F. chose to stay in L.A. near his elderly parents and start to family. In the collection is a small portrait of A. F. painted by Borglum. ©1996 - 2004 zplace.com
