The histories say that ADAM was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria, but as with many of the early pioneers of Tuscarawas County, that is certainly an error. He was probably born in the Palatinate, and at or near WALDGREHWEILER, as many of his relatives were.

His family came to the US in 1847, when Adam was only about 8 years old. The family first settled in Bucks Township, adjacent to Jefferson. Adam went to nearby Ragersville for 2 years, then relocated to Phillipsburg (now Stone Creek). Then he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. When his employer relocated to Iowa, Adam followed. In 1862 he enlisted in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in the Civil War at Chancellorsville, where he was taken prisoner. He was exchanged, and spent the rest of the war in clerical positions for the US Army.

Following his discharge, he returned to Phillipsburg, and joined his brother in the dry goods business for 8 years. Then he sold out, and became a farmer in the area, with 145 acres. The history says he was a member of the Reformed Church, so he was probably a member of Zion's Congregation.
