application of Mrs. Mary Etta Lightner Gum
    '2. Adam Lightner (1775-1843) m. 1798 Susannah Harper (1778-1868)'

  7. application of George W Cleek, in National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970.

Adam Lightner, born 9/10/1760, died 1-3-1843

This application was approved 15 Jun 1953 on the basis of Adam's father William serving in 1776 and from 1782-83 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Adam's inaccurate birthdate doesn't seem to have had a bearing on the approval.

  8. Adam Lightner, in United States. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans.

application by Geo. W. Cleek, dated 9-6-1957, stating that:
    - Adam was born Sept. 30, 1760 and died Jan, 3, 1843
    - He served as a prison guard in 1778, York Penna [citing Pennsylvania Archives, Sixth Series, 2:710, where an Adam Lightner (gun smith) is included in a list of 1778 prison guards]

Note that the application was cancelled with the note "unable to identify - per Mrs. Healy 9 Oct 57". Presumably the guard was a different (older) Adam Lightner.

  10. The census records, assuming they all relate to the same person, tell a story of a man married shortly before the 1800 census, head of a household with his wife, child, brothers, and mother or mother-in-law in Pennsylvania in 1800. His father may have already been looking for land in Virginia at the time of the 1800 census. It appears that Adam was in the process of moving in 1810, being enumerated in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with his wife, children and mother or mother-in-law, and again in Bath County, Virginia, without his mother/mother-in-law.

If his age range is correct in each of the census records, Adam was born between 1770 and 1775.
