Hanna, Adam - born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; entered service possibly in Pennsylvania; moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia where he entered service; resided there for many years; moved to Kentucky, where he died 9/24/1824 in Shelby County; married in 1793 to Nancy Canady, Mercer County, Kentucky; widow applied for Pension at abt. age 70 in Putnam County, Indiana in 1846, & Pension Application was rejected; resided there in 1855. She stated she was Nancy CANADY before her intermarriage with Adam HANNA, and they were married in Mercer Co., KY. Death: (1,9) 1823. (2,10) Shelby Co., KY. (10) 24 Sep 1824. (9) Was the only one of his name to serve in the Revolutionary War. Was wounded in battle. (10) His widow deposed in 1846 that he served in the Revolutionary War several tours amounting to about 5 years' service, apparently as a private, then Ensign or Lieutenant. She recollects hearing him say he served under Gen. WASHINGTON and was in the battles at (Longisle?), Trenton and Yorktown. She believes he resided in Rockbridge Co., VA and was born in or near Philadelphia, PA and may have entered the army from PA, but for many years he lived in the state of VA. He may have served in the regiment commanded by Col. George R. CLARK, but she has no documentary evidence in support of her claim. (9) 1777-1778: First Sergeant in Washington's Army that wintered at Valley Forge. (6a) 1782, 21 Aug: Adam HANNA of Berkeley Co., VA buys from David and Nancy PATTERSON 96.5 acres 19 poles in Berkeley Co. on the drain of Tuscarora Branch of Opachan, part of 2 tracts granted to David PATTERSON by the will of William PATTERSON, bounded by William PATTERSON, John McGOAN, Thomas MARTIN. Also 1/4 acre 20 poles in Berkeley Co., VA on Tuscarora branch of Opeckon, part of the tract granted to David PATTERSON by the will of William PATTERSON, beginning on the south side of Tuscarora Creek by the corner of a Smith's Shop. Wits. James MORRISON, Daniel DAVIS, Samuel PATTON. (The next deed dated the same date is from David and Nancy PATTERSON to Samuel PATTON, for the same tract.) (6b) 1783, 20 Aug: David PATTERSON & wife deed to Adam HANNAH, Berkeley Co., VA. (Bk 6, p.157) (5) 1785: On list of landowners, 1st Battalion, Berkeley Co., VA. (7) 1787: Adam HANNAH etc. taxed Mercer Co., VA, list of John ROGERS. (9) 1791: Served in an expedition against the Miami Indians with his brothers William and Thomas in Capt. James BROWN's Co. of mounted volunteers under General Charles SCOTT. (4) 1795: Taxed in Mercer Co., KY, district of James CLARK, for 4 horses, 9 cows. (1) Soon after the death of his parents, the sons sold their holdings in Mercer Co., KY and moved 4 miles from Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY, where they owned considerable acreage. (2) Three sons of James and Martha HANNAH moved to Shelby Co., KY, including Adam and Thomas. (3) Moved to Shelby Co., KY. (12a) Four children of James and Martha HANNA, Stephen, James, Adam and Hannah, removed to Shelby Co., KY from Mercer Co., KY. (9) Of Shelby Co., KY. (2) Several members of his family were living in the Bull Skin neighborhood of Shelby Co., KY. (9) Farmer. (9) Presbyterian.     County of Putnam } On this first day of October in the year 1846 personally appeared before
    me George Pearcy an associate Judge of the Punam circuit Court within and for the Count of Putnam in the state of Indiana Nancy Hanna resident of the County of Putnam and State aforesaid aged Seventy years past who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 7 1838 entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows. That she is the widow of Adam Hanna who served in the Revolutionary war several tours or terms she thinks to the number of five engagements or time amounting to about five years services as declarant believes from what she recollects of hearing her husband in his life time say and that apart of said services was rendered in the capasity of private soldier and that apart was as Ensign or Lieutenant or apart as an officer in each capasity of Ensign and Lieutenant.
    She does not recollect if she ever knew the names of the Captains and other officers under whom the said Adam Hanna served at any time nor does she recollect or know whether he served in the Militia or Regular Service. She recollects of hearing him say that he served under General Washington and she believes he was a resident of Virginia during the rendering of the said services. That she does not remember if she ever knew at what period or times he rendered said services nor at what time or times he entered the service in the army at any time nor at what time or period he was discharged from serving in said army but thinks she recollects of hearing him say that he was in the Battles at Longisland [sic: Long Island NY, 27 Aug 1776], Trenton [26 Dec 1776] and Yorktown [siege of Yorktown VA, 28 Sep - 19 Oct 1781] and others not recollected by declarant.
    She does not positively know where the residence of the said Adam Hanna was when he entered
    or engaged in serving in the army as aforesaid But believes he resided in the County of Rockbridge in the State of Virginia. That the said Adam Hanna was as she believes born in or near Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania and may have entered the army from and in the State of Pennsylvania. But that for many years the said Adam Hanna lived in the State of Virginia she has no doubts and believes his residence was in the County of Rockbridge in the State of Virginia when he entered the army and performed the aforesaid services and that he may have served in the Regiment commanded by col George R. Clark [George Rogers Clark] and that she has no documentary evidence in support of her claim. She further declares that she was married to the said Adam Hanna on the — day of — in the year seventeen hundred and ninety three (1793) That her husband the aforesaid Adam Hanna died on the twenty fourth day of September in the year of one thousand eight hundred and twenty-four in the County of Shelby in the State of Kentucky That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January seventeen hundred and ninety-four viz at the time above stated and was solemnized by one John Wrice a preacher of the Gospel and that she still remains a widow of the aforesaid Adam Hanna deceased She further declares that her advanced age and bodily infirmaties are such as to prevent her without much fatigue and trouble from appearing in open court to make this declaration the courts for said county being holden at Green Castle eighteen miles from declarants residence.
