Not to be confused with Abraham Irvine (1725-1814) of Scotland, Virginia and Kentucky. Some researchers have confused the two.


Abraham Irvin

Abraham Irvine (1729-1777) m. Margaret Rodgers (1744-1800) Abraham died of smallpox at Dumphries VA in 1777, during his Revolutionary War service. After Abraham's death, Margaret lived on at Hat Creek for a few years, but in 1781 or 1782 joined some neighbors who moved to Kentucky. In 1785 she married Col. James Smith, a widower with seven children.

    To the Hon. Mr. Speaker & Gentleman of the House of Delegates
    The Petition of Margaret Irvine humbly sheweth: That your Petitioner's husband Abraham Irvine enlisted in the Continental service as a soldier under the command of Capt. George Lambert (in January last) to serve for three years. That the said Abraham Irvine marched with his Capt. to join his Regiment & your Petitioner was soon after Informed of his Death (Occasioned by a bad Cold Settling in his Limbs together with the Small Pox). Your Petitioner begs leave to represent to this Hon. house that she is left with four small children & Pregnant with the fifth the oldest of which is not more than Ten years old, that she is left in very Distressing Circumstances her Husband being much in Debted & having but very small property, not Enough to Satisfy (as your Petitioner believes his Creditors) & your Petitioner fears she shall be left destitute of a single Shilling to support her fatherless Children on Except the goodness of your Hon. house will take her case under your Consideration & make her such allowances as you in your wisdom shall see just[?] & Your Petitioner as in duty bound shall ever pray &c
