Facts and Events
Cousin of Solomon Haines. Brother of Simeon and Isaac Haines. Settled in Virginia. Soon after their marriage Abraham and Sarah went to Frederick County, VA and were members of the Opeckon MM. In 1750 Abraham, Joshua Haines and George Washington acquired 1122 acres of land on the south branch of the Bullskin Creek. The Haines kept 700 acres of it and in 1752 Joshua sold his share to Abraham, Jr. By spring 1758 he and his family were back in New Jersey. Their departure was said to have been hurried as they were frightened by the Indians. Abraham, Jr. was said to have lived in Virginia about 16 years and died shortly after returning to NJ from smallpox. He died in 1760. In Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants, by Thomas Kemp Campbell, see p. 481: Dorsey de Haven... lives on Lower Back Creek, and owns what was known for many years as the old Abraham Haines property. In Pioneers of Old Frederick County, VA, by Cecil O'Dell, on p. 337: Abraham Haines of NJ bought 882 acres on Back Creek from Lord Fairfax on 21 Oct 1754. He was deceased by 1767 and conveyed it to his sons and grandsons: Abraham, Thomas, Isaac, and Benjamin Haines. The 882 acre tract is located approx 1/2 mi s. of Shanghai on County Hwy 7 in Berkeley Co., West VA. See Gray, Northern Neck grants: H-480, R-108. |
