"Abiud Fairchild, the Revolutionary soldier, moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina, to what is now Johnson County, Kentucky, in the year of 1808, and settled on Big Paint Creek. His home was near Fish Trap Meeting House, a famous Baptist Church building some six miles from Paintsville." The forgoing information concerning Abuid Fairchild was copied from pages 127-134 of "Harman's Station" written by Wm. E. Connelley, of Topeka, Kansas and published by the Torch Press of New York in 1910.

The timeline below is a shortened version of material prepared by Steve Burkett in 1990:
1778 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. when he first entered service in Rev. War
1780 discharged in Wilkes Co., N.C.
1781 again served and was discharged, served in company in which William Jackson was Captain
1781 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. after war until he went to Floyd Co., Ky in 1808 (see below)

    • This record is for Eben Fairchild, Abiud's father. Abuid is not listed in 1790 under his own name in Wilkes County. Neither Tennessee or Georgia have an existing 1790 census. Eben's code is 1-2-4 so I don't believe Abiud is included with Ebenezer's household which has only 2 sons under 16 listed.

Info from Abiud's pension app:
1781 lived in Wilkes Co., N.C. after war until he went to Floyd Co., KY in 1808
This statement conflicts with the fact of Abuid's being enumerated on the 1800 census in ASHE Co. He had not moved and probably still considered that he still lived in Wilkes. But the area he lived in was cut out of Wilkes and named Ashe County in 1799; therefore, his appearance on the 1800 Ashe County census.

The family has probably not moved. Ashe County was cut from Wilkes Co in 1799. Later, the area became Watauga Co.!

It is impossible to detect close neightbors from this 1800 census because it has been alphabetized! Abiud and Rebecca were 26 thru 44 yrs old; born between 1756 & 1774 and have six daughters. Nancy was married and out of the household by then. 1799 Ashe County was cut from Wilkes County so now the family is found in Ashe because the county line moved.

Dec 1800: son, Asa born - Since Abuid's home was now in Ashe Co; his son was prob born there and Rebecca died there though most records still record them as being in Wilkes County. 1801 24 Jan: wife Rebecca Jackson died now within Ashe Co.! And by 1808 Abiud is said to be 'of Carter Co', so he had moved slightly west to Carter Co. TN. Father-in-law, Wm Jackson had bought land in 1794 in Washington District, NC which later became Carter Co TN. William's deed is recorded in Carter County and is transcribed on my site. It could be assumed that Abiud took his motherless children the short distance from Ashe county over to live temporarily with his deceased wife's father, William Jackson in Carter Co. Therefore, when he sold his land in Wilkes, he was said to be 'of Carter County'. Then it looks like after selling the land, he moved to Floyd County, Kentucky.
