From Nashwaak Bicentenial Assn (Application for Old Soldier's Pension): On June 22, 1838, Abigail applied for relief. She stated that her husband, John Sutherland, had served for eight years as a Private in the 42nd Highland Regiment and that she was now 63 years old, very infirm, and unable to support herself. She stated that her son, William, had died the previous Fall and that the only living son had a family of his own. Her son, William, had died at the residence of Thomas W. Underhill, Blackville Parish, at the age of 23. William was Thomas' brother and Underhill was Thomas' brother-in-law through his sister Mary Ann.
