Aaron apparently always gave his name as "Whitecotton." His children, some time before his death, changed that to merely "Cotton." The inscription on his grave marker (erected much later by his children) treats "White" as a middle name and gives his name as "Aaron W. Cotton." His son is also "Smith W. Cotton."
