9/25/2001 A. Gordon Schlafke A. Gordon Schlafke, 84, died suddenly Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001, at Ashley Manor. Rev. Ray James will conduct graveside services in the Meridian Cemetery at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2001. Services are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Service, Boise. Gordon was bornJuly 20, 1917, in Ashtabula, Ohio, to Arthur John Schlafke and Harriett E. LaDue. He grew up in Ashtabula and as a young man was turned down for military service so he came to St. Maries, Idaho with the CCC's in 1935. He got a job with the Forest Service in 1936 and worked fighting fires and living on Lookout until1940. He returned to Ohio during the winters. He moved to Mackay, Idaho in 1945 and built the Wagon Wheel Motel. He then brought out his widowed mother and younger brother and sister to live in Mackay. He gave his mother the strength and support she needed after his father's death. In 1953, Gordon moved to Boise,where over the next several years he built the Thunderbird Motel and the Stardust Motels in Boise and Idaho Falls. He took great pride in the quality and workmanship of every job he did. Gordon married Ardis Burt on Nov. 26, 1960 in Caldwell. They lived in Boise and Meridian and enjoyed time spent at their cabin inMcCall. He also was an avid golfer and loved to fish and bowl, and to hunt inhis younger years. On Sept. 8, 1999, he accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at home with Ardis. Gordon suffered with Alzheimer's in his last years. He was cared for at home by his wife and daughter until April 2001, when he went tolive in Ashley Manor. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Stephanie and Shirley at Ashley Manor for their constant loving care. Survivors include his wife, Ardis; son, Randy Schlafke of Boise; daughter, Carole Vaughn and husband, Garret of Nampa; son, James Schlafke Clawson and wife, Susan ofCharlottesville, Va; sisters, Helen Moy of Marysville, Calif., and Irma Rukavina of Pocatello, Idaho; and a brother Paul Schlafke and wife Sheron of Idaho Falls. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Cherie Ann, and by his brother, Robert. The family suggests memorials in Gordon's name be made to the American Red Cross, who purchased him a suit in 1935 so he could graduate from high school. Family and friends may come for a viewing from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Riverside Funeral Home, 9603 W. Chinden Blvd, Boise.
