Harlan Jerome Schoennauer, Resident of Stockton

Born August 23, 1924 in Palo Alto, CA, to Oscar and Gretchen Schoennauer. Harlan is survived by his daughter, Janet Fergusson Schoennauer and her husband Bill of Soquel, CA, and 2 sons, Mark J. Schoennauer , his wife, Laurie of Stockton, and Joseph M.Schoennauer of Angels Camp, CA. Also 4 grandchildren, Daniel R. Schoennauer, his wife Edda of Valley Springs, CA., Jared P. Schoennauer and his wife , Nicole of Stockton, CA., Tara E. Schoennauer of Stockton , Anita Brown of Modesto, CA. and 8 great grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters in law , Juanita Huff of Turlock, CA. , Leola Musson of Lake McClure, CA., Loretta and Richard Hartnell of Modesto, CA, Reyna Schoennauer of Palo Alto, CA. Preceded in death were his son, Allan Jerome Schoennauer and his brother Darrell Schoennauer.

Harlan graduated from Sequoia Union High School in Redwood City, CA June 1942. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Navy, Harlan served on the USS Halford as a gunners mate second class during World War 2. Harlan served in the following engagements, August-September 1943 Marcus & Wake island raids, December-January 1943-44 Bougainville operations, January-February-March 1944 Bismark Archipelago operations, June 19th & 20 1944 The Battel of Philippine sea, (The great Marianas turkey Shoot) June-July-August 1944 Saipan, Tinian & Guam Landings, September 1944 landing on Palau island October 1944 landings on Leyte Island P.I., October 24 & 25 Night surface engagement battle of Surigao strait, December 1944 Landing of on Mindore Island and in January 1945 the landing on Luzon island. Despite several attacks from the Japanese Kamikaze planes, Harlan survived and returned home in October 1945. He married Genevieve U. Musson on November 13, 1943 in Phoenix, Arizona. Harlan began his career with San Mateo County division of forestry assigned to the fire house in Sky Londa. Harlan was injured in a large grass fire in the hills above San Bruno in October 1956. Harlan Retired in June 1975 after 28 years of service from the San Mateo County Assessor's office. He was a Senior Property Appraiser at the time of his retirement. Harlan made his home in Los Altos, CA. He was an avid gardener that loved to grow vegetables. He kept his friends and neighbors well stocked with produce during the summer months. Harlan was a member of and past president of the Unitarian church of Palo Alto, where he met the true love of his life, June Ida, they traveled, camped, gardened together. They loved to hike in the various national and state parks thru out the country. Harlan made his home at Atria bay side landing senior living in Stockton for the last 6 years. Harlan died Friday, February 18, 2011 with his family at his side after a short illness. Harlan's interment will be private at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto, CA.
