Family talk:Josiah Leathers and Amy Zeigler (1)

Marriage place [3 July 2012]

Marriage in Jefferson County, Iowa. See index on FamilySearch: [1].

My grandmother, who was born in Oskaloosa, was a great-neice of Josiah and knew all her Leathers relations pretty well. In her genealogical notes, compiled from the 1930s into the '50s, she notes this marriage as having taken place in Mahaska County -- but I doubt very much that she ever saw the courthouse record for it, even though she had an exact date for it. (Nor have I, though I'm rummaged around in the Oskaloosa courthouse several times.) Presumably the info came from one of the many family members with whom she corresponded. The first census listing for Josiah's & Amy's family, though, is in Mahaska in 1870, so it always seemed reasonable.
The 1925 census info is from their daughter, Flora, more than sixty years later, and since Josiah's family lived in (at least) three different counties, I have to wonder whether she really knew the truth -- or whether the enumerator spoke to the right family member. (I doubt Mr. Bettendorf knew where his long-deceased in-laws had been married.) Anyway, Josiah didn't move to Fairfield (that I know of) until the 1880s and Flora spent her teens there, so she may have been making assumptions.
The info at FamilySearch is a much better source and I don't quite know what to make of it. Amy Zeigler was from Ohio but (this being a collateral line) I haven't really researched her family's migration to Iowa, so I don't know whether or not they settled in Jefferson County. There are a lot of Zeiglers in Evergreen Cemetery, but mostly of a later date. (And there are a lot of Germans in the county generally.) If that's where Amy was living in 1861, and the marriage took place there, I have to wonder what Josiah was doing there. He was in Mahaska in the 1860 census, and he enlisted in Aug 1862 in Mahaska. On the other hand, Fairfield is only about 50 miles from Oskaloosa. Since FamilySearch's source is "official," it certainly takes precedence, but I'll see if I can find collaboration, or an actual copy of the original record. --MikeTalk 08:51, 3 July 2012 (EDT)

Hi Mike, well at least your grandmother had the right date. This genweb page has the license #, [3]. I could not find the record image online, but this is an additional source. Have fun researching. Oh, I almost forgot. There are two additional Lathers marriages on this grooms page. Maybe they are connected to your family. --Beth 17:19, 3 July 2012 (EDT)
