Children of WILLIAM THOMPSON and MARY PATTON are: i. JAMES3 THOMPSON, CAPT., b. Abt. 1750, Augusta County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1811, Washington County, Virginia; m. CATHERINE SHELBY; b. 26 Feb 1755. Notes for JAMES THOMPSON, CAPT.: http://www.cragun.com/brian/thompson/11-1.htm Descendants of James Thompson of Augusta County James Thompson was born ca. 1750 in Augusta, Virginia, the son of William Thompson Jr. (b. ca. 1720, Ireland) and Mary Patton (b. 1722), who was the daughter of Colonel James Patton. James married Catherine Shelby (b. 26 Feb 1755). Their son, Captain James Patton Thompson (b. 1782) acquired a great deal of prime land in Burkes Garden of Tazewell, some by inheritance, some by legal decree [Pendleton, History of Tazewell, pg 507-509.] Major Archibald Thompson, son of the other William (discussed in the previous section) purchased a large tract of land from James Patton Thompson in Burkes Garden. James Patton Thompson married Margaret Workman (b. ca. 1788). Their children were Patton James Thompson (b. 9 May 1809, Washington, Virginia) and Catherine Shelby Thompson (b. 1811). Most of the descendants of James Patton & Margaret Thompson lived in Tazewell, presumably many in Burkes Garden. [Thompson, Desc. of William Thompson] A comparison of this line with the descendants of Andrew Thompson shows no connection, no marriages. Nor are there any connections nor marriages to the William Thompson line that I can find. I find it fascinating that these lines are so separate, yet so close. In the eastern Tazewell district about 1850, there are descendants of Andrew at Clear Fork, descendants of William Thompson in Burkes Garden, some 20 miles away, and descendants of James Patton Thompson also in Burkes Garden, yet no marriages I have found so far. Perhaps this is just coincidence. Yet these same families married others from greater distances. There is more to understand, here.
Re: Thompson's,1730,Virgina Posted by: Cliff Thompson (ID *****5049) Date: August 23, 2002 at 10:49:18 In Reply to: Re: Thompson's,1730,Virgina by Jourdan Burke, Jr. of 25502 I have that Capt. James Thompson, son of Mary Patton and William Thompson, Jr., was married to Catherine Shelby. This James Thompson b. ca 1750 in Augusta Co., VA. and d.ca 1811 in Washington Co., VA. The only child of James & Catherine that I have is William Preston Thompson, MD b. 5 Aug 1788 in Augusta Co. A brother of Captain James Thompson was Patton Thompson md. 1797 in Montgomery Co., VA. This Patton Thompson md. Judith Farley and I have one child named William Patton Thompson b. 1799 in Logan Co., VA (now WVA). This William married a Martha (surname unknown) and a child named Mary Jane Thompson was born to the coupkle in 1837. There is a possibility that I lack some info re the Patton Thompson's. I have plenty of Mary's but none married to a Burk. In fact, I have no Burk's in any of the many people in my genealogy program. As for Long, I have one married to a Mary Read ca 1840...linked to my wife's line of Culpeper, VA Read's.

Notes for WILLIAM THOMPSON: Posslble clue to this or another William Thompson?: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/i/c/John-C-Pickens/FILE/0023text.txt One source says Jean MAY be Jean Crockett, based upon this Augusta County, Virginia record: August 1767 - William Thompson and JEAN his wife to John CROCKETT, part of land formerly surveyed for Robert Crockett, deceased. Delivered to James, Oct. 1773. NOTE: It appears that William Thompson married Jean Crockett, widow of Joseph Crockett.
