There are several marriages of a William Hutchinson and a Jane in Yorkshire and County Durham in the years leading up to the baptism of this couple's first child in 1819. It has not yet been possible to be entirely sure which (if any) of the marriages found are this couple, although some have been ruled out, as discussed below.

1. 1 Apr 1811, Gateshead, Durham - William Hutchinson & Jane Bailes - This couple appear to have stayed in Gateshead, having several children baptised there between 1813 and 1829, with William described as a waterman or keelman.

2. 7 Dec 1814, Staindrop, Durham - William Hutchinson & Jane Morton - The marriage record describes this William described as a farmer, which does not appear to fit with the known occupations of the man we're looking for. There are a few baptisms scattered across County Durham (Bishopwearmouth, Easington, Sedgefield) where the parents are William & Jane Hutchinson and the father's occupation is farmer in the years after this marriage.

3. 26 Dec 1814, Kirby Wiske, Yorkshire - William Hutchinson & Jane Bell - This couple had a son baptised in 1816 at Kirby Wiske, with the baptism telling us that William was a shoemaker, which does not appear to fit with the occupations we're looking for. This couple appear to have later moved to Ingleby Arncliffe and then Carlton Miniott, having children baptised at each.

4. 20 Jul 1817, Crathorne, Yorkshire - William Hutchinson & Jane Dalking - No further information found on this couple.

5. 25 Nov 1817, Whitby, Yorkshire - William Hutchinson & Jane Swales - Marriage record describes William as a cartwright, which may fit with the couple we're looking for, as the man we're looking for was described as a coachsmith in 1851. However, this couple seem to have lived at Newholm in Whitby parish, appearing there in the 1841 census (H107/1265/10/5/3) with several children and William described as a joiner, whilst in the 1851 census William (by then a widower) was described as a joiner and cartwright (HO107/2374/606/6).

6. 20 Dec 1818, Barton (St Cuthbert), Yorkshire - William Hutchinson & Jane Bradley - Marriage record describes William as a weaver, plus this couple appear to have stayed in Barton, having several children baptised there between 1819 and 1825.

The most plausible marriage would therefore appear to be No.4 in Crathorne, although it remains possible that the correct marriage has yet to be identified and is none of those considered here.

There was another John Hutchinson baptised at St Margaret's church in Durham on 27th June 1841 who was described as the son of William and Jane Hutchinson. Whilst this is the same church that this William and Jane had their youngest daughter baptised at, that John is from a different family - that baptism record (image 631 in the Bishop's Transcripts 1765-1919) gives his parent's address as South Street and father's occupation as mason. There was a mason called William Hutchinson living with a Jane Hutchinson at South Street in the 1841 census (reference HO107/320/8/32/6), so it is clear that there were two pairs of William and Jane Hutchinsons having their children baptised at St Margaret's in the early 1840s, including a Robert Liddle Hutchinson in 1844.
