William enrolled in Jones County, Iowa,as part of The 9th Iowa Infantry Regiment, an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Per 'Report of Adjutant General and Acting Quartermaster General, Vol 1, by Brig Gen NB Baker (Jan 1, 1867, see pg 581)' William H. Hunter was Corporal in Iowa's 9th Infantry--Company D, and died "of lung fever" on Apr 19, 1864. William Hunter's wife ALMIRA MANDIGO, b 1832 Brownsville, Jeff Co NY, d. Canton Village, Brandon township, Jackson Co, Iowa , was daughter of STEPHEN MANDIGO, b 1803, NY, d. Jackson Co, Iowa m. Sally Hatcher. Almira's father Stephen Mandigo, b 1803 likely Herkimer Co, NY,, lived Brownville Jeff Co, NY, in 1830s, then moved to Canton village, Brandon Township, Jackson Co, Iowa where he died. Per 1854 State Census, he was living in Canton Iowa. It may be the reason William Hunter moved out to Jackson Co, Iowa.
