DANIEL HUNTER, b. abt 1778 Middletown, Bucks, PA who moved to Philadelphia township (aka Quaker Settlement), Jeff Co, NY. before 1809. Per books of Cadwallader Child (surveyor), Daniel Hunter opened an account in Philadelphia, Jeff Co NY in 1809 (See Geographical Gazetteer of Jefferson County, N.Y. 1684-1890, Parts 1-2, 'Town of Philadelphia', p 617). In 1811, Daniel Hunter worked in District 12 of LeRay Township (ie Philadelphia district) under John Strickland, overseer, in surveying or building a road, likely to Alexandria Bay's port. He is listed living in LeRay Township married w/ 1 child in Fed Census 1820.Court records from Bucks PA in 1820 for his father Andrew Hunter's last will show Hugh Hunter (son) as executor of estate in Bucks Co, PA and Daniel Hunter (son) of Philadelphia Township, Jefferson Co, NY, In 1845 Jefferson Co. NY Tax Rolls, Daniel Hunter owns 60 acres of land in Orleans, Jeff Co, NY In 1850 Fed Census for Orleans, Jeff Co, NY Daniel Hunter, b 1778, wife Sarah b 1788, w/ three adult sons: Henry, Thomas and William (age 20, w 18yr old wife Almira Mandigo living in household, but misidentified as daughter of Daniel). Daniel likely died after 1855, no record given in later census. (A Daniel Hunter, b 1777, d. Dec 21,, 1865 is buried at Spragueville Cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson Co, NY about 6 miles from Philadelphia, Jeff Co NY, and may be same man). Daniel's sons Henry and William later died almost same year (1864-1865 while serving in Civil War), so eldest son Thomas is sole surviving heir. Note: Henry died 1865 of smallpox at Kalorama Hospital, Wash DC--- He is shown as from Orleans, NY (included in Civil War records of Orleans/4 Corners in 1863), serving as a private, age 37, in Company G, NY 10th Heavy Artillery Regiment, under Capt. Russell B. Biddlecom. William died 1864 of lung fever--- Per 'Report of Adjutant General and Acting Quartermaster General, Vol 1, by Brig Gen NB Baker (Jan 1, 1867, see pg 581)" William H. Hunter was Corporal in Iowa's 9th Infantry--Company D, and died "of lung fever" on Apr 19, 1864." If Daniel d. in Dec 1865 buried in Spragueville Cemetery, it was shortly after the death of his two sons. Son William's wife, Almira Mandigo, remained living in Canton, Jackson Co, Iowa where her father Stephen Mandigo, b 1803 Herkimer Co, NY had moved. Her four children: Charles b 1850 Orleans, NY; Mary Ellen b 1853 Orleans NY; Stephen b 1857 Orleans, NY; Sarah b 1860 Jackson Co, Iowa. (shows date of move to Iowa for William Hunter was abt 1860).
