This is perhaps the most difficult Buckner family in mid-18th century Caroline County VA to reconstruct. Almost all that is known of it is from Crozier, but the errors in it are significant. Crozier lists 5 children, William, Richard, Francis, George, and Thomas. There is direct evidence that George Buckner does not belong in this family. Scouring county court records reveals enough information about William that we can be reasonably sure he's in the right family, and we have direct evidence that Richard and Francis were brothers. Absolutely no information about the alleged 5th son Thomas has emerged, so even his existence has to be discounted. While there is no known direct evidence that Richard and Francis were in fact sons of William Buckner and Judith Hawes, there isn't any apparent contradictory evidence (as there is with George), so for now it is probably reasonable to accept that the traditions Crozier was relying on contained some germ of truth. Note that a contemporary but slightly older William Buckner of Caroline County (d.ca. 1787) also had two sons named Richard and Francis, and Crozier confuses them regularly.
