The family had a German Shepard named "Pal." Carrie would put a grocery list and money in a change purse in a basket with a handle. Pal would go to their grocery store where Leister was. He would put in groceries and a piece or two of cold meat for Pal. Pal would go home with the groceries where Carrie would then give Pal the cold meat.
