Research Notes

No good match found for Thomas or Samuel Ray in 1850/60/70 census (ancestry.com index search).

Have examined the Jefferson County birth records available on FHL microfilm, and could not find any trace of these Rays. I looked through all births on FHL 829325 for years 1853-1876, and did not find a single Ray. I also looked through the birth and death records on FHL 829326 for 1866-1889, and only found one Ray reference, a Dec 1876 death:

RAY Wm H, white male, died in Shepherdstown of typhoid fever, age 22 yrs 10 mos, parents John and M. Ray, born in Jefferson Co, laborer, unmarried, reported by John Ray (father)

Does this mean that Horace's birth went unrecorded? Or could he have been born elsewhere, but raised in Shepherdstown, so considered that his birthplace?
