Notes for SAMUEL "GPS" MCSPADDEN: http://tnhendersons.rootsweb.com/monroe2.html Samuel McSpadden was born in VA in 1756 died in TN in 1844. Buried in Dandridge TN in the center of town. His first wife was Sarah Keys and his second wife was Nancy Harris. In the D.A. R. Lineage Book #13 member # 13957 the service record of Samuel McSpadden during the Revolutionary War can be used to support descendants claims. He enlisted from Rockbridge County VA. He received a pension when he died in Jefferson County TN. (Hicks, 1926).
In 1910, Lucinda Giles, sister of Jessee and Nica, is living with Hannibal McSpadden her brother in law. The McSpadden family has deep roots in eastern Tennesse and and Virginia. Hannibal McSpadden's father was Samuel Keyes McSpadden. Samuel K. McSpadden was born January 30, 1798. Samuel's parents Samuel McSpadden and Sarah Keys/Keyes. Samuel was born October 10, 1756 near Lexington, Rockbridge County, VA. Sarah Keys may have been the widow of Roger Keys and the daughter of William Adair. Samuel and Sarah had nine children. After the death of Sarah, Samuel married Nancy Harris and had eleven more children. His home is still standing at Strawberry Plains, Jefferson County, Tennesse. Samuel's parents were Thomas and Nancy. Thomas McSpadden was born about 1730. He came to America possibly with the Lyle family from Ireland. They were originally of Scottish descent. He purchased land in the Borden Tract in what is now Rockbridge County, VA. In 1750, he was one of the founding members of the TimberRidge Presbyterian Church just north of Lexingon which still stands today. Samuel first married a Jane Henderson, who was born 1821. He later married a Patsy , who was born about 1805. Samuel Keyes McSpadden was living in Monroe County, Tennesse in 1850 with his wife, Patsy 45, Hannibal 23, Arnold 21, Thomas 13, Nice 12, Nancy 7 Constantine 6, Lauretta Davis 22, and Lucretia age 2. It is not known when Jessee Giles passed away. He may have been buried in New Providence Cemetery in Tellico Plains, in Monroe County, Tennesse.

(1) Polly Berry, (2) Sarah Keyes, 1782, Rockbridge, VA. marr. (3) Nancy Harris in TN. Rev. War Vet. On Feb. 7, 1834, Samuel McSpadden appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County and applied for a pension for his services in the Revolutionary War. He stated that he was 78, that in 1775, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, he was drafted, reported at Lexington, VA, and enrolled in Captain Charles Campbell's Company, commanded by Colonel Dickerson. That he marched to Point Pleasant on the Ohio River, where he served as a private for 3 months, and received a discharge which he lost. In 1776, he was drafted again, enrolled in McDowell's Company, marched to Donley's Fort on the frontier of Greenbrier County, Virginia, commanded by Colonel Donley. He helped guard the fort for 3 months, received a discharge which he also lost. His pension was granted. Samuel McSpadden (1756-1844) came to Jefferson Co., TN in 1792 and claimed his large land grant which he received from the government as part payment for his military service in the Revolutionary War. He first built a log home down the hill from the present home. Old Pete, committed to Alva McSpadden's care as long as he should live, lived in the "Old Brick" until his death. He probably was a child at the time of Samuel's death. He died after 1892. Samuel built "The Old Brick", the ancestral home in Jefferson Co. in 1804. He made the gun powder used by Andrew Jackson to win the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. Justin Oliver McSpadden has a story about the delivery of the gunpowder to New Orleans and Sam's subsequent efforts to collect from the Government. The details of this story are also written in Anna McSpadden's book - "Way Back When". Twice married and had 20 children. (Some reports say married three times but no issue of the first marriage). The book "Tennessee Cousins" page 98 shows Samuel and an as-yet unidentified "James" McSpadden as elders of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church at Dandridge in 1816.
