... He was married Jan. 22, 1834, to Mary Crouch, born in Ross Co., Ohio. They had. seventeen children, eleven of whom are living -- John, Syntha, Sarah, Abram, Thompson, James, Joseph, George, Louisa, Frank and Philip. Mr. Crose owns 163 acres of fine land on sections 13 and 18, having his residence on section 18, Irvington township. Politically he is a democrat. Mrs. Crose is a member of the M. E. Church.
August 28, 1855 the twins, James and Joseph Crose, were born a short distance southwest of the Mann home in Irvington township. These were the first births that occurred after the first settlements began.

No records of "Syntha" have been found, or of the 6 children who died before 1884 when that book was written. One online family tree lists a Solomon born in 1841 and dying the next year, if true, he would likely be Sara's twin.

... the Robison and Crose families came on up to Kossuth, arriving during the month of July. ... Phil Crose, who came with his family when the Robisons arrived, took for his first claim a portion of the southwest quarter of section 19 and built his primitive cabin of logs a short distance southwest of the present Mann home. It was while the family were living there that the twins, Joseph and James Crose, were born, August 28, 1855. These were the first white children born in the county. During that fall Mr. Crose sold his claim to James Parnell of Indiana, and then in the following spring took an other on the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 18 where he raised his large family.

The original record is hard to read, but it appears that the marriage license was arranged on 19 Jan 1835, but the actual wedding was on 22 Jan 1835.

Either way this is a more reliable source that the history book cited above.
