Violet attended the 1-room school, Book School, that had a stove in the middle of the room. When Paul's family moved to Allen County from Indiana, they attended West Union Church, the same church that Violet and her family attended. Paul and Violet's brother, Roy, ran around together in Roy's Model T Ford.
Paul's family moved and Paul attended York High School in Jonestown and Violet attended Spencerville High School.
Violet was a country girl and found her high school, a 3-story building, intimidating. She credited her friend, Fern Goodwin, for encouraging her to stay in school. Violet was the first of her family to graduate from high school as Ruby and Roy had dropped out to work.
After marriage, Paul and Violet first lived on the 40-acre Louth farm but did not earn an income.
Then they moved to the Johnny Mills Richard's farm where they milked 12 cows twice a day. They were given lodging and $20 a week, and each year they received a hog as well. To buy coal "was a treat" and Paul mostly chopped wood for cooking and heat. Paul dug a hole and put a stone in the bottom for refrigeration.
Paul and Violet next moved to the David Breese farm where they received an income of $35/week and where they lived for 4-5 years. This was Ruby Pauline's first home.
Paul became sick with an ulcer in his duodenum and his doctor ordered him to stop farming. Violet's relative, Lloyd Miller, worked for Buckeye Pipeline and he was able to get Paul hired there. Roy Reynolds was also hired (and later, Paul and Violet's son-in-law, John Medaugh).
