Violet to Granddaughter, Rebekah: Paul's parents were "hard up." Charles had been a street car conductor in Fort Wayne, Indiana, before he lost his job in the Depression. They moved to Allen County where Nellie's sister, Bertha Coile's husband ran a hay bailer business. They lived in several places because they were so poor and could not afford rent. Violet recalled that Paul and his father cut wood, "the old fashioned way."
Violet recalled that when Charles and Nellie left Indiana for Ohio, they brought their twins, Paul and Pauline, and Bob; but Pauline didn't stay long and moved to Indiapolis to work. (This contradicts the John Medaugh's verbal history that Pauline was left behind to work.)
The family attended the West Union Church, the same church that Violet and her family attended. Violet's older brother, Roy, and Paul ran around together in a Model T Ford that also transported the kids to school. Paul's family moved and he attended York High School in Jonestown, the first in his family to graduate high school.
