Martin Connolly was born in Ireland January 1849. He married on 13 January 1876 Margaret Gould/Gold, who was born in New Jersey in March 1858, daughter of Martin Gould/Gold and Ann Smith, both born in Scotland. At the time of the 1900 Census, they were living in Union Twp, Bergen Co., N.J. in a home they owned. They later moved to Rutherford. Martin had immigrated in 1870. He is obviously related to Thomas Connolly (say 1810-1882), since many of the witnesses at baptisms and weddings are from the Connolly and McEnery families. He also shares the family occupation, since he was a butcher. They were members of St. Mary’s Parish, Nutley, Essex Co., N.J. A page one article in the 12 Feb 1894 issue of the New Brunswick Daily News-Times recounts that he stepped off his train into the path of another train and was left with a fractured skull and broken shoulder. "For years he conducted a meat store in Lyndhurst, but recently has been employed in the machine shops of the D. L. and W. roads at Kingland [sic]." "Martin Connolly was formerly a resident of this city, where he carried on the butchering business. He is married to a daughter of Robert Gold, engineer at the Fruit Jar works, who resides at 66 Morrell St." References
