In the 1930 Federal Census, Joseph and his wife Dona were living with his parents at 1201 Lillie Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Joseph and Donna had two children, one son and one daughter.

Joseph was 52 years old when he died.

Joseph's obituary reads, "Joseph W. Ort, 52, of 715 Walnut St., died at 3:05 p.m. yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. Ort lived in Fort Wayne most of his life. He was a former machinist for the General Electric Co., having retired in November because of poor health. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Survivors include his wife, Donna; a son... and a daughter...; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Koehnlein, Miami, Fla., and six grandchildren. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tom Mungovan Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral, Msgr. Thomas L. Durkin officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the St. Vincent de Paul Society will recite the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday."
