Jonathan Miller, my paternal grandfather, who descended from German parentage, was born at or near Funkstown, Washington County, Maryland, probably in the year 1759, or possibly 1760. In his early boyhood his parents removed to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood, married Mary Hickman, (his cousin) who was also born of German parentage, at Funkstown, Maryland, her family also having removed to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in her childhood. Their marriage was probably in the year 1780 or 1781. From this marriage they reared a numerous family of sons and daughters, six of whom grew to man and womanhood, all married and nearby all lived to an old age. Jonathan Miller after his marriage continued to live in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, first in Uniontown and, subsequently, in Brownsville, unitl all his family were fully grown and all but one (the youngest) had married, when about the year 1814 he removed with his wife and unmarried daughter to Mt. Vernon, Ohio, where he continued to live until the time of his death, which occurred in the winter of 1848-9, in his 89th year of life. His widow (my grandmother) survived him and lived on to her 99th year. They are both interred in the cemetery at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Jonathan Miller was in his early life an energetic businessman, quite successful as a merchant, in which business he was engaged for many years in Pennsylvania and Ohio. His life was strictly temperate and he enjoyed in a remarkable degree the respect and confidence of the community in which he resided. Was a member of the Legislature of Ohio, did service as a soldier in the Revolutionary War and in several Indian wars. His life was that of an honest Christian man. Both he and grandmother were in religious Dunkards. Their long married life, more than sixty-seven years, was characterized by the utmost confidence, peace and love. References
