- ↑ The will of Henry Spring, dated 29 Jun 1695, mentions daughter Elizabeth Mellings, but never names her husband (Middlesex Probate 21123). Bond, p. 229, says Elizabeth is then the wife of John Mellen, citing Barry, p. 249 and 325. But Barry on, p. 249, only says that John Gale m. Elizabeth Spring with no mention of any subsequent marriage for the widow; and on p. 325, says that John Mellen, m. Elizabeth ---. Barry has no section for surname Spring. Clearly, it was Bond that assumed Elizabeth's husband was John Mellen. But the John Mellen mentioned by Barry was 7 years younger, of Charlestown not Framingham, and hence is not a good match. In addition, other evidence (i.e., his probate) also shows he almost certainly married Elizabeth Bucknam. Meanwhile, according to Barry p. 327, Thomas Mellen of Framingham had a wife Elizabeth, surname not given, first child b. 1691, 3 years after John Gale's last known child with Elizabeth Spring in 1688. It is not obvious this is John Gale's widow, either, but suggests that, at best, John Mellen is a rush to judgement by Bond, and more likely, is simply wrong.
