The letter tells that she was a good mother to the children and in her old age "she lived with one of the step-daughters, Dr. and Mrs. Beeson in Ashville. She had a good home, and they were good and kind to her. She lost her mind and was a great care to them."
She survived all of her sisters and brothers. Jim Burks, who had been married to two of Bet's sisters, later married one of Bet's step-daughters, Susie Phillips. He wrote to Bet's Texas kin about her death, "...a good woman gone."

    [Sims.FTW]

Jim was the hired hand who ran the farm for the Martin sisters after Richard Posey married and moved to his own home. Jim was about 24 and Jane was 51, and her sisters did not favor the marriage because of the age difference. However, after Jane died, her sister Nancy married Jim. Jane willed 1/3 of her share of the John Martin farm to Richard Posey, 1/3 to Bennie Davis, and 1/3 to Jim Burks.
