1. JOHN4 LOWRY (JOHN3, JOHN2, MR.1) was born Abt. 1749 in Augusta County, Virginia1, and died Oct 1792 in Abingdon, Virginia2. He married DORCAS MONTGOMERY 1771 in Augusta County, Virginia3, daughter of JOHN MONTGOMERY and ESTHER HOUSTON. She was born Abt. 1758 in Virginia4, and died 29 Dec 18345.

John Lowry III was Baptized 26 Feb 1749, by Rev. John Craig, at South Mountain, 16 miles SW of Tinkling Springs, Fisherville, VA.</P>

After 1771 John Lowry III migrated to Washington Co., VA.

According to "Summers History of Southwest Virginia", John Lowry received a land grant in Washington., VA. 1773. He was a prominent man in his community, was Capt. of Militia 1777-80, served as 2nd Lieut. at King's Mountain. (His descendants say that he lost a leg there). He was a member of the House of Delegates in the General Assembly of VA 1788. He died in Abingdon 1792. <P>Most of the information about John Lowry III and Dorcas Montgomery's family was extracted from "The publication of the Montgomery Clan Society of Tennessee" May 1997. ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. page 595 Page 17.--1st September, 1790. Hugh Campbell, of Rockbridge, to John Lowry, of Augusta. Delivered: Joseph Lowry, son of John, 10th August, 1791. 130 acres, part of 200 acres conveyed by Charles Campbell to James Campbell and descended to Hugh as heir of James. Children of JOHN LOWRY and DORCAS MONTGOMERY are: i. JAMES5 LOWRY, b. Aft. 1771. ii. WILLIAM LOWRY, b. 28 Nov 17716. Notes for WILLIAM LOWRY: From Bill Reisor: William went to Tennessee. Perhaps this William came to Blount County and was confused with their Uncle William Lowry and/or William McClellan Lowry.

The Blount County Census of 1830 lists two William Lowrys in the 40 to 50 year age group.

A petition filed in Tennessee State Archives, "The petition of John Montgomery of Blount County 1826 Landsuits" asking for redress of land suits has around a thousand signatures, including those of James R. Lowry, John M. Lowry, Wm. Lowry, and William M. Lowry. iii. JOHN MONTGOMERY LOWRY, b. Bef. 1775. Notes for JOHN MONTGOMERY LOWRY: From Bill Reisor: John Montgomery Lowry was in Blount County before 1795. He practiced law in Maryville before 1800, was a Justice of the Peace and represented the county in the State Legislature 1809, 1817 and 1827. He was associated with his cousin John Montgomery in real estate transactions. He is marked as a land owner in Maryville's first city map. (from John and Esther Houston Montgomery, 1719 to 1974.)

History of this family has been documented by descendants Bates Block and summarized as follows: "He was named for Lieutenant Robert Edmodstone a hero at the battle of King's Mountain and a very dear friend of his father. Lt. Robert Edmondstone and John Lowry were lieutenants together in Colonel Campbell's regiment of Virginians, and were side by side when, on Oct. 7, 1780 Lieutenant Edmondstone was killed in action at King's Mountain.
