There Was No Son Named William

In 1858 John Adams Vinton included in this family a son William, who had with wife Hannah a daughter Susanna born in Braintree on 23 September 1666 [The Vinton Memorial … (Boston 1858). p. 323]; no such entry appears in the Braintree vital records, but there was a Susanna, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Hayden, born there on 28 September 1666 [BrVR 645]. Since this daughter Susanna is the only time the supposed William is seen, there is actually no evidence for the existence of William.[1]

(John Hayden married) by about 1634 Susanna -----, who was named in his will, and had been his "faithful companion for many years"; there is no indication of any earlier wife, and she was very likely the mother of all his children. Since John Hayden was in Dorchester by 1632, and the eldest child was probably born about 1634, the marriage most likely took place in Dorchester.
