John Hall, Sr. (1650)

Name: John Hall, Sr.

Birth: June 15, 1584, Kent County, England. (The Halls of New England/Hall, 1883) [Halls of New England says he was born 1584 in County Kent; does not specify a date]

Emigration: To Boston/Roxbury before 1635; to Hartford 1636; to Middletown in 1652.(FFS) [Frank Farnsworth Starr was one of the premier genealogists of his day. The dates given here probably reflect the assumption that the Boston freeman of 1635 was the same man as John Hall of Hartford and Middletown and that he came to Hartford with Rev. Thomas Hooker in 1636. The first actual record of John Hall in Hartford appears to be in 1639 when he was called "a proprietor 'by courtesie of the town'." See Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, p. 290.]

Death: May 26, 1673, Middletown, Conn.(MVR, BCVR)

Occupation & Public Service: House-builder, ship-builder (GFSC); townsman, constable, grand levy man.(FFS) "A town meeting was held at his house in February 1652, when it was voted to build a meeting house."(FFS)

Marriage: m.(1) Esther (unknown surname)(possibly Willicke), before 1618, Kent County, England (b. 1590, Sussex, England; d. before 1633, Sussex, England).(The Halls of New England/Hall, 1883) [Halls of New England does give a place of this marriage nor dates and places of birth and death for his wife. The ""possibly Willicke" probably refers to his son John's wife Ann Wilcox. See her person page for more detail. The name "Esther" for his wife appears, as far as can be determined, only here (and repeated by Barbour in Families of Early Hartford; Torrey gives her neither a baptismal name nor a surname.]

Children: 4 children between 1619-1626.
