In 1841 census, John is a lead ore smelter, age 45, in Moorhouses, with Hannah (40), Sarah (14), Thomasin (10), Jane (5), and John (2).

In 1861 census, John is a farmer of 72 acres and lead ore smelter, age 67, in Moor House, with Hannah (63), Sarah (34), Thomasin (30), Jane (24), John (21), and a grandson John (1). All children are listed as unmarried. The grandson, as it turns out from later censuses, belongs to Sarah. The Joseph Short family also lives in (an adjacent?) Moor House.

In 1871 census, John is a farmer of 72 acres, age 77, in Moor House, with Hannah (73), John (32) (farmer of 50 acres), Thomasin (39) (dressmaker), Jane (34). The children here are all unmarried. Sarah (29, sic) is in Low Acton with son John (11). The Joseph Short family is still living in an adjacent Moor House too.

In 1881 census, John has passed, Hannah (84) is still in Moor House, farmer of 126 acres, with daughter Jane (44) and son John (42). Sarah (52), a domestic servant, is in Low Acton with her son John (21), an agricultural laborer. (Thomasin has presumably married W. Ridley, she is not here.)

In 1891 census, Hannah and Jane have passed, John (52), farmer, is by himself in Moor House with a servant. Sarah (64) is in Low Acton with a servant. (Where is her son John?)

In 1901 census, John (62), farmer, is still in Moorhouses with a servant. Sarah (74) is in Low Acton on her own. Her son John (41) has married "Maggie" (40) and has a daughter "Laura A" (16), living in Elswick, Newcastle.

The last surviving child was John, who died in 1906 at age 67, and left a considerable bequest to St. Cuthbert's Church in Allendale to fund a stained glass window, the clock in the church tower, and a nice memorial stone for the family.

In 1911 census, grandson John (51) with wife Margaret (50) and daughter Laura Annie (26) have moved into Low Acton, where his mother had lived.
