The family of six emigrated from Hamburg aboard the "La Rochelle" and arrived at Port Adelaide on 3 September 1855. According to the passenger list, the family consisted of the two children from the marriage to Christianne, Caroline aged 17 and Wilhelm aged 15 as well as the two surviving children from the marriage to Eleonore, Ernst 5 and the infant Pauline. In the late 1850's & 1860's the family lived around Greenock in the Barossa Valley where Gustave, Harry, Gottlieb & Mary were born. They then moved to South Kilkerran on the York Peninsular.
