After marrying in Niagara County New York, James and Harriet Taylor moved to south-eastern Michigan with Abraham and Abigail (Bell) Taylor and their son John Taylor (and probably other relatives also) circa 1835. Several of the Bell and Taylor relatives are buried in New Hudson MI.

In the early 1840s they moved to south-central Michigan near Harriet Brewer's sister Ezubah (Brewer) Lovell.

In the early 1850s they moved to south-western Michigan. There Harriet Brewer died in 1854 and James soon married Chloe Stansell.

Before 1860 Harriet Brewer's recently widowed brother John Brewer also moved from New York to south-western Michigan.
