In the name of God Amen. That I, James Doran of Washington County, Virginia, weake in body but of common state of Judgement and memory, calling to mind the mortality of the body and that it is appointed for all once to die do recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in a desent Christian manner at the discretion of my Executors, and as for what worldly estate of goods and chattels it has pleased God to boess me with in this life I order leave and begueth in the following manner viz: first I leave and bequeth to my beloved wife Margaret all the movables I an possessed of at this time to use and dispose of as she thinks proper, and the negro wench Silla (?) diring her life and after her decease to be given to my daughter Peggy to her and her heirs, I order and leave the land to be divided in the following manner viz, to son William two hundred acres and to son James two hundred acres and to son James two hundred acres, to be divided as they think proper and to my son Alexander forty acres alongst this own land, and I do hereby revoke and disanul all other wills and Testaments and fo confirm this to be my last will and Testament, and do appoint my beloved wife and son Alexander to execute this my last will and Testament, in witness whereof I do hereby set my hand and seale this seventh day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine. 1799.

The last will and testament of James Doran, Dec'd, was proven in court by the oaths of Adam Hope, John McCauley and David Lowrey the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Alexander Doran one off the executors therein named who took this oath prescribed by law, and together with David Lowrey his ???? entered into and acknowledged their bond in the sum of two thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs. A Certificate is therefore granted him for the probate of the said will in due form.

Alexander Doran took up land at the head of Cane Brake Springs, Iron Mountain, in Washington Co.,VA, 1774. He served as Ensign at King's Mountain and as Major in the War of 1812. About 1800 he removed from Abingdon to Tennessee, the part now included in Johnson Co. He helped to establish Duffield Academy, said to be the first educational institution in that section of Tennessee.</P>
